Noise for Pretend and Blanket Music have similar tastes. They like hard-hitting drums, guitars that can recreate the slow bossa nova dreaminess of Joao Gilberto and Gilberto Gil, and the sweet flexibility of the human voice. In two of my favorite tracks, Noise for Pretend’s “Money Penny” and Blanket Music’s “Bunny”, Esperanza Spalding and Chad Crouch sing sweet echoes of hummed Ms and Os into the wind. You travel with the voices as you would along Buenos Aires waterfalls, following each song to its conclusion with a wide-eyed look of awe. As with the best from Blueboy, it’s as if you’ve been thrown into a world of exotic fantasy, ripples from which permeate your every day. You want your dreams to remember that music and make it their soundtrack.

Even after listening to this album so many times, its simple appeal to just “shut up and sway your hips” rings as true now as when I first heard it. Perhaps better than any other Hush release, it illustrates the label’s “anti-rock” stance. This isn’t a release that will smack you upside the head or announce itself for your attention. It waits patiently to be found, and when it is, it lavishes its beauty (not to mention wit and soul) on the listener.

Megablast, an arcade Shoot 'em Up from Taito, has an FM synth arrangement of Chopin's piano piece, Fantaisie-Impromptu in C-sharp minor. It doesn't show up during the game itself, but in the attract mode. Beethoven's Ode to Joy accompanies the ending cast roll.

The brainchild of Hush Records president Chad Crouch, this group originally began after being asked to perform at a friend’s wedding reception. Consisting of everything from jazz and rock to bossa nova and pop, Blanket Music continued to perform around Portland, Oregon. Compared often to Belle and Sebastian as well as Nick Drake, Blanket Music released its debut effort, Nice in 2000 on Hush Records. A split EP with Noise For Pretend was well received by both press and fans. Blanket Music also released a split EP with Reclinerland. In 2002, Blanket Music rounded its sound by adding two female vocalists, Corrina Repp and Esperanza Spalding.

The record is both freewheeling and down to earth at the same time – a hard thing to pull off – and titles include "The Man", "Hold Me Back", "Time To Die", "Red Glow", and "Government Man". Hold Your Fire is a really great second set from Patto – a record that maybe tips the balance more strongly towards guitar sounds than the previous, but one that still preserves all their really unique sense of arrangements and songwriting! Vocalist Mike Patto is kind of a lost legend from early 70s rock – a singer who might have given some of the bigger Brit names a run for their money, had he ever gotten a chance to really shine in the spotlight. But it's also that suppressed fame that makes his presence on this record so great – a completely unselfconscious approach that fits in both with the grittier numbers and some of the more open, chromatic tunes. Titles include "Hold Your Fire", "Give It All Away", "See You At The Dance Tonight", and "How's Your Father". Next is Roll Em Smoke Em – maybe the funkiest record ever cut by Mike Patto and crew – a set that's got a nicely loose, unbridled feel – and plenty of funky drums and percussion from John Halsey! The group have really hit their prime here – so much so, they almost don't need any larger concepts or ideas to guide them – and are just comfortable to get together and work out some nicely rough-edged ideas – with Patto himself sounding maybe a bit more blue-eyed soulful/rocker, and Ollie Halsell kicking up his guitar with a lot more fuzz. Titles include "Flat Footed Woman", "Singing The Blues On Reds", "Loud Green Song", "Turn Turtle", and "Peter Abraham". Last up is Monkey's Bum – material that was intended to become the fourth album from Patto – an excellent UK group who never fully got their due! Patto have a great sound that's kind of like higher progressive rock ideas taken down into bluesier territory – with an earthiness that maybe a few key contemporaries got right – maybe Traffic or Procol Harum – and, like both of those groups, one that was capable of really hitting things right on the nose with a special sound that was all their own.

Crouch, a painter, Portland music fixture, and head of Hush Records, is best known for his fine solo album, Portland, Oregon. While his songwriting skills were quite evident before, Blanket seems to have given Crouch a more spacious and better equipped stage on which to let his ideas play themselves out.

The Konami game Magician's Quest: Mysterious Times/Enchanted Folk and the School of Wizardry takes this almost to the point of abuse. Almost all of the overworld and event music is based on existing classical pieces, ranging from the well-known (like "Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy" and "Beautiful Dreamer"), there are also some lesser-known oddballs thrown in (such as the "Love" theme being Debussy's "Petite Suite"). However, the game also provides a large assortment of original compositions for you to play on your in-game instruments, so, there you go.

There isn’t a sound on this earth that can compare to that of a Rhodes piano. It’s a comfortable and warm sound, but it’s also a very cool sound, adding color to soul, trip-hop and more sonically sophisticated rock. It’s on the coolest of records, ranging from Miles Davis to Joni Mitchell, and in every case, it’s the most sublime sound, no matter how subtle. I’m a sucker for its warm tones, so much that I proposed an idea for a band consisting of little more than Rhodes, lap steel and vibraphone.

Crouch’s sincerity is hard to dismiss. Some would call such an outlook disturbingly cynical, but you get the sense that Crouch takes pleasure in what others tend to ignore.

The shape of the phrases, sung in 6ths, rises (B-G), falls and turns back on itself (F-E-D-F), and is then partially inverted or 'mirrored' C-F#, finally rising from F#-A. There is a textural reduction at the words 'Cast his eyes on distant skies and slowly moved his arms', which is sung over piano arpeggios with organ accompaniment. Arpeggio figurations become the basis of the material for the 'Flying' section. It seems as though McDonald prepares later material by alluding to it by partially 'hiding' it in different forms, and in this way the melodic, and harmonic material grows organically.

A really fantastic record from the Lebanese composer Ziad Rahbani – music for a play, but a set that's also got a fair bit of bossa nova elements too! Birdman fire flame skull. The songs are a mix of vocal numbers that are more straightforward and Mid-East in style, and instrumentals that blend jazz with light orchestrations that would have been right at home on Elenco Records in Brazil during the 60s – sophisticated, but gently grooving – in a way that's completely sublime! Joseph Sacre handles the vocals on the tracks with lyrics – and those range from midtempo numbers that have a fair bit of percussion and woodwinds, to one number that gets a bit more upbeat and grooving. The instrumentals dominate, in a really great way – and titles include "Last Scene", "Second Introduction", "Al Bosta", "Reda", and five "Variation" tracks.

One of the only two songs featured in the entirety of Portrait of a Lady on Fire is the third movement of "Summer" from Vivaldi's Four Seasons (which would have only been a little less than a century old at the time). It's featured in two scenes- the first being when Marianne plays a bit of it for Héloïse on the harpsichord, the second being the ending scene, where Marianne witnesses Héloïse being overcome with emotion while experiencing it being played by a full orchestra.

Anchored by the super-tight rhythm section of Dave Depper (bass) and Greg Lind (drums), “Cultural Norms” runs the gamut of American popular music. Mixing blues, Motown and country with soul and jazz, “Cultural Norms” is a go-getter of a record. It’s both respectful of tradition and artistically ambitious in its range. By using all the major American musical forms, it’s as if Crouch is celebrating their cultural importance while simultaneously acknowledging their ultimate demise in an increasingly sanitized and crumbling American civilization. Crouch counters the seriousness of the subject matter with a sly sense of humor that shows itself in the music as much as in the lyrical content. The album offers a drollness that is hard to resist, and Crouch thankfully never stoops to just being a smart-ass.

Politics were a big part, mostly in the form of antiwar sentiments. Much of this music was built around the "Make Love Not War" mentality. Instead of mop top long hair, the hair was LONG and beards were common and it helped create a new division between generations. Group performances and concerts became light shows and "experiences"! Whenever he's not using snippets from game soundtracks, The Kilian Experience frequently uses classical music as background music to his game guides. Amongst numerous examples is his use of Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" to hype up the terrifying windmill he's trying to destroy in his Besiege guide and using a piece of Guiseppe Verdi's "La Donna E Nobile" while explaining how to best cook and serve a Reaper Leviathan.

A long-overdue full length album from Family Of Swede – not a group from Stockholm, but a funky soul combo that worked in Oakland in the late 70s, but only ever managed to issue one single at the time! This set brings together a nice batch of unreleased music by the group – finally giving them a foothold in the legacy of Bay Area soul, and a chance to show off their great talent for both warm harmonies and more grooving rhythms – often done with a mode that's more east coast soul than some of their Cali contemporaries! We actually like the midtempo tracks here best – as the group seems to have a special sort of sparkle in that mode – gently stepping with a sense of warmth and sophistication that's totally top shelf, and which hardly sounds like work that has sat in the can for the past few decades. Titles include "Sad Lonely Feeling (70s version)", "Where Are You", "Living From Day To Day", "Life", "I Got To Move On", "Everybody Must Pay", "The Girl's Alright With Me", "Set You Free (short version)", and "When Tomorrow Comes". CD also features bonus tracks – including "Living From Day To Day (70s version)", "Mellow", "Set You Free (long)", "In My Lonely Room", and "Rob's Rap".

A soaring, burning set from Gene Chandler – completely different than his early hits, and a key point in the transformation of Chicago soul in the 60s! Gene's always had a heck of a great vocal range – and he really gets a chance to use it to best effect on this album of jaunty and groovy little tracks – tunes that bounce around with that majestic Chi-soul style of the late 60s, all produced to perfection by the great Carl Davis! The sound is sublime – a pulling together of so many different strands into one bold, proud sound – sophisticated yet soulful, and with a rhythmic component that really sets the album apart from the pack. And even when Gene's singing tunes that you may know from other singers' hits, he does a tremendous job of transforming them – recasting them into his more mature groove, and managing to funky them up in ways we wouldn't expect! Evidence to this is the album's great version of James Brown's "There Was A Time" – which is followed by loads of other great cuts, including "Cowboys To Girls", "Fooling Around", "Pit Of Loneliness", "Never Gonna Give You Up", and "Laughter To Tears".

Lean, righteous blowing from the legendary Frank Foster – one of a handful of extremely hip sessions he cut in the 60s under his own name! The album's the only record Foster ever did for Blue Note – and we dare say it's even better than his previous 60s work on Prestige and Impulse – with a quality that's even darker, even deeper, even more advanced from his earlier years with Basie. There's a rolling, joyous groove to many numbers – that late 60s take on soul jazz that made for so many great tracks on albums by Hank Mobley or Lee Morgan near the end of the decade. Foster keeps things tight, but he's also got an expansive vision too – an edge in the horns that points the way towards some of the chances he'd take in the 70s, but which is still wrapped around a leanly leaping soul jazz groove! Foster wrote 5 of the 6 tracks on the album, and he's working here with a sextet that includes Garnett Brown on trombone, Marvin Stamm on trumpet, and Richard Wyands on piano, who brings in some offbeat notes and colors throughout. Rhythm is by the excellent team of Bob Cranshaw on bass and Mickey Roker on drums – and titles include "Seventh Avenue Bill", "Stammpede", "Little Miss No Nose", "Manhattan Fever", and "Loneliness". Added to the core album is a full bonus album – recorded by Foster nearly a year after the first, and even more far-reaching! There's a quality to the date that mixes together Frank's previous soulful vamping with some more introspective, more lyrical moments – almost modern at times, but not entirely so – and played by a septet that includes Ed Pazant on alto and flute, Burt Collins on trumpet, George Cables on piano, and Jimmy Cleveland on trombone. Foster himself plays a bit of alto clarinet alongside his usual tenor – and titles include "Fly By Night", "Slug's Bag", "What's New From The Monster Mill", and "Hip Shakin".

This band does not tour beyond Portland often, but their Blanket Music is all about movement. They strap the indiscriminate past and future of popular music to their backs, then travel, within each Blanket song, through the kitchens, family rooms, shopping districts and music halls of Earth. Theirs is a worldly, domesticated music that evokes the unity of people and cultures. Vibes are steered to the positive, with the poetry behind the occasional criticisms (“Hot designers fresh outta school / Gotta hustle to be cool”) always softening the bite. A track like “Karaoke” serves as a typical Blanket Music celebration, as it’s a party thrown in honor of life.

John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison who all sang and played guitar, and their drummer, Ringo Starr. People just fell in love with The Beatles and their music. It just so happens that The Beatles were not only good at making music, but they were pretty clever too. They thought about all the things going on in the USA, and all over the world. By the later 60's music was more important, it seemed, than maybe ever before. People wrote songs not just for dancing, but for what the songs had to say. The music was everywhere and very popular. During this same time, young people heard about some odd drugs. Not the proper kind that your doctor gives you when you're not well, but strange chemicals that actually changed the way people thought and saw things. These drugs were not good to use at all.

We're taking flight now with "Bird on a Wing", an emotionally-rich song featuring soaring vocals and the sound of that oh-so-beautiful organ in accompaniment. The dazzling guitarist deserves a mention too with his stirring power chords carrying the music along on a sonorous wave of sound. Just when you thought this album couldn't get any better comes "God of War" to close out the album in dramatically fine style. The music rumbles along like a powerful express train steaming down the tracks with the powerful voice of the singer sounding like he's ominously prophesising doom and gloom and catastrophe. It's a suitably dynamic and dramatic conclusion to a superb album.

But if Crouch is sick of “nice,” that doesn’t mean he’s become nasty– and his best weapon is his frailest: his voice, a thin reed that sounds ragged and vulnerable to the elements. While his vocal style fits the band, his best moments come when he sings a capella, cooly drawing you in by singing in a vacuum. Most of the lyrics take the form of a monologue, and while they’re sometimes too literal or limited by their topicality, they catch the confusion and doubts of the characters, who never decide if what they’re seeing is wrong.

Rare Bird - Sympathy

It is in C major with a balancing descent to Bb major, and is a bright, optimistic and energetic piece with a middle section featring solo drums and percussion which precedes a flute solo with electric guitar. The first half of Verse 1 is also sung over the drums alone, with the ensemble entering during the second half of the verse. The central section section is balanced by a section of long parallel chords for brass and flute, with bass and softly struck cymbal attacks before the recapitulation of Verse 1, this time including a funky organ accompaniment with some unison electric guitar and brass riffs. The song ends with a soft coda, with the bass outlining a whole-tone scale A-G-F-Eb, which subsequently becomes the repeated pitches A-G with A minor7 - G minor7 chords. These underpin melodic fragments from the chorus, 'To-Mor-row's Peo-ple', A-A-C-A-F, which again emphasise the minor and major thirds which seem to be at the centre of the entire work.

Westworld has Claude Debussy's "Reverie" which was first used by Ford to calm down Maeve who went hysterical after losing her daughter to the Man in Black. It turns out that this is the favorite piece of Arnold's late son which, in turn, was played when Arnold arranges his Thanatos Gambit with Dolores. More fittingly, this piece was played when Ford closes his farewell speech to the Delos board by welcoming his new narrative: kickstarting the Robot War by letting Dolores shoot him in the head and firing at the guests.

Trailers for films (though mostly for TV Spots) use "Hall of the Mountain King" A LOT. Although in the UK the music is heavily associated with the Alton Towers theme park, so it always seems odd when it turns up anywhere else- for example the recent Windows Phone 7 advert, which has confused a lot of people (especially as it includes a clip of people on a rollercoaster).

In a year where Shawn Wiggs, Joe Scudda and the suddenly unbearably bad Eminem have done their best to convince people that white men can’t rap, this track was the rare exception. A striking portrait of the psychological effects of the Vietnam War, the members of Jedi Mind Tricks and RA the Rugged Man, convincingly take on the persona’s of Vets. The track is harrowing and thought-provoking, something all too rare in contemporary hip-hop.

One of the last records that Booker Ervin ever recorded, and one of the best! There's a depth of tone and conception here that goes far beyond even Ervin's already-great albums for Prestige – a mix of modernism and soulful expression that really points the way towards jazz expression in the 70s – although sadly, Booker was to leave the planet before getting a chance to stretch out in that era.

I’d expect American bossa nova to be as bad as other Americanized ethnic creations, like American ska, or American chop suey. In addition to having a stand-up band, Crouch succeeds by not pretending to be anything he isn’t– instead of posing as a smooth island loverboy, he sticks to wry lyrics and mundane topics. He has three jobs: as a musician, as a designer, and as the head of this label; and he likes to talk about the need to slow down.

Lovely modern soul from Maysa – one of the most consistently rewarding voices of the past couple decades – whether it's on her always appealing, often overlooked solo efforts, or her work with Incognito! Back 2 Love covers the full spectrum of her talents, from modern takes on classic soul songcraft, easy going jazzy soul, classic disco reverent numbers, and even a couple slow jam duets! It has the feel of a Greatest Hits sets, which is a testament to how strong this record is, from track to track! A great mix of jazz and soul from Randy Crawford – and a 90s set that almost takes us back to the best sounds of her early career in the 70s! The work here is nicely relaxed – not trying for a hit, even when things are smooth or a bit uptempo – especially given the mis-steps that Randy might have made with some of the mainstream genres of the time. A few cuts feature nicely restrained instrumentation – especially Crawford's leadoff duet with pianist Lou Levy on a version of "I'm Glad There Is You". Other tracks include "In My Life", "Why Can't We Take A Chance", "Year After Year", "Mad Over You", "Don't Say It's Over", and "Can We Bring It Back".

I was almost 8 and I loved Donny a little bit, too. I did not love softball, but everyone else seemed to, so I tried to pretend like I did. It seemed like every night I was at the local ball diamond, watching the Purple Turtles. There wasn't much to do there in the bleachers. The Purple Turtles weren't very good, and I don't ever remember them winning a game, or even coming close to winning, so cheering seemed kind of beside the point.

It would be easy not to notice this album if you dropped in at a party, and it just happened to be playing in the background. The music is so laid back and innocuous that it just hangs pleasantly in the air. You probably wouldn’t know why you were tapping your feet, but each song has a secretly magnetic pull. You may even wake up the next morning humming one or two of the tunes, unable to remember where you’d heard it before.

The music on Nice seems more influenced by early jazz and bossa nova style music than pop, but Crouch has pulled those influences into a more traditional pop structure and created some absolutely beautiful songs. Nothing here comes out too harsh or difficult, making it almost easy listening, but not in a muzak sort of way. It’s lovely stuff, light and jazzy and just poppy enough, all with some incredible vocals.

In contrast, sometimes we’ve been known to get snow this late in the year, but with the high temperatures already shown it looks like 2002 is going to go down in the recordbooks as another power grid cruncher. That in mind, it’s a good thing that Move came out when it did, because it’s a nice little 40-minute trip of light, poppy music that somehow manages to make the oppressive weather slightly less so. This section is grounded by a low E pedal pitch from the Hammond bass pedal, which prepares a magical sounding, aleatoric section of zither and metallic timbres.

Rare Bird is literally a rare bird - not all that many bands at the time had the versatility of two keyboard instruments. One being Hammond organ, other electric piano. I feel like this is where this group really shines. They definitely use two keyboards to their advantage. Electric piano is used when more percussive parts are needed, while Hammond delivers lush tones we all know and love.

The reason it sounds so much like a live band is precisely because the individual songs were basically recorded live. As a result of that immediacy, as well as the loungy feel of many of these songs, the natural tendency while listening to Nice is to drift off in thought or take up an unrelated activity. Though the music makes for truly wonderful background, and could cast a soft, soothing light over any scenario, sitting down for an attentive ride through this album is a wholly different experience. For all its airiness, occasional bounciness, and live performance feel, Nice makes a remarkably intense and enduring listen. So much so, in fact, that I’ll hold off making some idiotic pun with the word “nice,” and just exhort you to find a copy.

Blanket Music, who I believe used to be just Blanket, kick things off with a radio edit of “Hips” from their upcoming album. Spalding’s vocals (or perhaps Corrina Repp, who is also listed as contributing backup vocals), singing the catchy “shut up and sway your hips,” may contribute the best line from a song that I’ve heard in a long time, and Crouch’s soft vocals during the verses merge effortlessly. Blanket Music add more electronic elements to the bossa nova style, with keyboards contributing bleeps and blips into the background behind quietly bouncy, danceable pop. A bit more laid back, “Bunny” is softer and pretty, and “Bicycle Theif” [sic] is more rhythm-focused and beat-heavy. Their closer, aptly titled “Song,” is a more playful pop song. Bouncy and light, with Crouch’s enigmatic vocals working nicely over the light guitar, this is a fun track.

With a name like Blanket Music, it’s not too difficult to imagine what’s in store. Blanket, the band’s original moniker, is abstract enough for a bouquet of indie varietals, but the addition of “Music” can only mean one thing: sweet and tender indie-pop. Chad Crouch, bandleader and head honcho of Portland, Oregon’s Hush Records, formed the in-house group of label-mates for a friend’s wedding. CCR were a very important part of that legendary rock festival, but didn't get placement on the original record in a way that lived up to their presence at the concert – a fact that's nicely corrected here, with a double-length album that brings together every song they played that night in 1969! It is hard not to feel a little sorry for Hush Records. Despite having a stellar roster of bands onboard, almost every single one has been overshadowed by one of their former bands — the Decemberists. Even the label founder Chad Crouch’s band Blanket Music have managed to slip by almost unnoticed despite four albums of increasingly impressive, gentle indie pop. But try as they might, Blanket Music will always make nice music. Whilst in the past, they’ve tried to fight that, The Love/Love Translation — their new double album — finds them giving in. As the title implies, this is an album about love, and for the most part, it focuses on happy love too, which is a welcome change. Initially, Blanket Music have a real knack for sounding like Belle & Sebastian, mainly because the vocal similarities between Crouch and Stuart Murdoch. Yet on subsequent listens, The Love — a collection of 11 of the band’s own songs — takes on a personality of its very own. It creeps up slowly on the listener, never begging and eventually getting the attention it deserves. Disc two, Love Translation, collects together 11 cover versions of love songs originally sung by other bands who have had some kind of connection to Hush, such as Norfolk and Western, Kind of Like Spitting, M. Ward and, naturally, the Decemberists. In some ways, this is the better disc of the two, simply because it feels like the band are pushing harder to distance themselves from the original versions of the songs.

Terry Callier's first album for Cadet – and the kickoff of one of the greatest three album runs that any soul artist ever recorded! This one's got a different feel than the later two, as it takes songs by Terry, and structures them with these little musical "seque" tracks in between every song, done in a sparer folksy style that recalls Terry's roots in the Old Town scene in Chicago. At the time, Terry was making the transition from folk artist to soul singer – and he'd been picked up by Jerry Butler and The Dells as a promising young songwriter, one of the best talents of the second generation of Chicago soul stars. The record's a stripped-down affair that features a small group with Charles Stepney on harpsichord and organ, Callier on guitar, and backing vocals by Minnie Riperton, Shirley Wahls, and Kitty Haywood. The album kicks off with Terry's great little pop ditty "Ordinary Joe" – probably the catchiest song he ever wrote – then rolls into more somber titles like "Occasional Rain", "Do You Finally Need A Friend", "Golden Circle", and "Blues For Marcus". A totally unique album – and a prime example of the genius that was coming out of Chicago at the time!

We have to admit, we had a lot of misgivings about this project before we gave it a chance and listened to it all the way through – but after all was said and done, we were quite impressed! While Herbie Hancock, Roy Hargrove and Michael Brecker all have the chops, recognition and reputations to make as many new recordings as they'd like, without resorting to pandering tributes, this project actually works beautifully and makes great sense. The group is rounded out by the elastic rhythms provided by John Patitucci (who seems to have graduated well beyond the sort of 6 string noodling he usually purveys) and Brian Blade. In most cases, we'd rather hear Miles doing Miles and Trane doing Trane, but this group manages to capture both the dark, brooding beauty of Miles' music and the deeper, soulful vein that Coltrane mined. Herbie sounds the best we've heard in ages and the highlight of this live set is a medley of Miles' "So What" and Coltrane's "Impressions", while the rest of the set is made up mostly of originals (2 more Coltrane pieces, "Naima" and "Tansition" are included) composed by members of the group like Hancock's "The Sorcerer" and Hargrove's "The Poet".

The lower parts are involved in suspension-like movement on the word 'glue', and close on an A major chord. Suspensions have been anticipated at the cadence of Section ia) of the introduction which, in turn, balance the oscillating organ suspension, I - IV/I, at the end of the piece. The second verse beginning 'Harness leathers and rainbow feathers' extends the previous suspensions on the word 'points' closing on a sustained A9 chord. An instrumental section of alto saxophone, bass and drums follows.

Stuntin’ Like My Daddy

Valerie June's been bubbling under for almost a decade – recording work with other artists, doing a variety of projects, and finally getting her chance to shine in the spotlight with her previous debut – yet it may well be this well-crafted second album that finally puts the singer over the top! Valerie's completely her own woman here – not beholden to any sort of easy tags or cliches – including the "rootsy soul" or "folksy diva" tags that we heard batted around before – and instead, almost inventing her own genre for the record – which has a vibe that makes us guess that it's going to be the start of a huge legacy of fame to come for June. Her voice is timeless, the instrumentation (https://srirejekifastboat.com/serial-code/?file=9586) is nicely understated, and the production is very easygoing – yet the whole thing comes across with a crispily compelling sound that could appeal to both hipsters and their more mainstream friends. That might sound like a dig, but it's not – just our way of illustrating the soon-to-be universal appeal of the singer! Titles include "The Front Door", "Astral Plane", "Long Lonely Road", "Just IN Time", "Slip Slide On By", "Two Hearts", and "Got Soul".

He died when Air India Flight 101 crashed near Mont Blanc on 24 January 1966. Many possible theories of the crash came up including a conspiracy theory in which the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is involved in order to paralyze India’s nuclear program.

Mad Maestro is effectively a rhythm game series about public domain works, namely classical music, as you play as the conductor of an aspiring town orchestra. One of the Japan-only follow-ups introduces Christmas music as well.

Also combined with Soundtrack Dissonance in Dragon's Lair II: Time Warp: The soundtrack that plays entirely in the background of Level 5 while you avoid getting eaten by a fire-breathing cat is the first part of Symphony No. 5 in C minor (Allegro con brio) by Ludwig van Beethoven. This also counts as a Genius Bonus when you notice that the song number is the same as the level number.

Whereas Blanket Music’s “Song” takes a different route, with the lyrical spontaneity and randomness of a quilt honoring William S Burroughs, it’s still kept rather tightly within a pop format. Noise for Pretend are looser in their melodies, but equally engaging thanks to the dark overtones of Spalding’s bass and her gift for delivering retro descriptions (“his addiction is making poor young girls cry”) with sincerity. Where Crouch’s voice worked wonders by cutting-and-pasting favorite moments in that hipsway portion of your brain, Spalding succeeds by bringing the whole platter to you in an appropriately glamorous and jazzy fashion.

Blanket Music dabbles in lounge, jazz, bossa nova, and retro guitar pop with sweet male/female harmonies. The music does not engage you directly, but if you engage it, you’ll find yourself charmed by the breezy hooks and smooth flows. Vocalist Chad Crouch receives his share of comparisons to Belle & Sebastian’s Stuart Murdoch, which is justifiable to a degree, as they both possess a hint of the ghost of Nick Drake, but I think Crouch sounds more like an infinitely less neurotic Gordon Gano of the Violent Femmes. And maybe a hint of David Byrne.

One of the greatest southern soul talents presents a host of other great talents from his 70s generation – and also throws in a fair bit of his own tracks as well! Sam Dees is one of the all-time greats in our book – a songwriter to rival the best that Stax had to offer back in the day, and a hip, talented singer who really furthered the legacy of deep soul in the 70s – even though he never fully got the chance to hit the heights. Yet that never stopped Sam from giving his best – as you'll hear here in a set of tracks that are all original tunes penned by Dees, including a few unissued tracks, and others that came out as small label singles at the time.

I've listed a few already, but there were songs on the "poppy" side and some almost ballad-like songs that also dripped psychedelia to me for oddness or "love child" mentality or just plain "grooviness! And almost all from the 18 month period of psychedelia.

RARE BIRD maybe was a somewhat "atypical" band for the Pop Rock record market, because (like PROCOL HARUM) they had two keyboard players, But "Sympathy" is a slow song, with a good melody sung by the singers and played at the same time with the organ. It really is a "serious" and "sad" song that was successful maybe more due to the content of the lyrics. Another very characteristic thing from this band was that they had two very good lead singers (drummer Mike Ashton and bassist-guitarist Steve Gould). This song is more Prog Rock influenced than the song which was destined for the "B" side, titled "Devil's High Concern", which is more a fast Rock song with a distorted electric piano playing a very good solo similar in sound to the one used by Jon Lord with DEEP PURPLE. It seems that this song was only originally released in the "B" side of this single and was not released in their first album.

The Revenant embraced a different visual language from what I was used to. We used wide lenses—from a 12mm to a 21mm, including the equivalent field of view in 65mm. Movement is exaggerated in a wide lens so camera moves were slow, graceful, and exact. These slow deliberate moves would go from an extreme close-up to a perfectly composed wide, beautiful vista, and back to a close-up. The characters in the movie are so emotionally driven that the camera needed to be an emotional extension of them.

Wolfgang Krauser's music from Fatal Fury 2 (and its update Fatal Fury Special) is an arrangement of Mozart's Dies Irae, even with an orchestra playing the song in the background. Said music was recycled in The King of Fighters '96, and an 8-bit rendition played in SNK vs. Capcom: Match of the Millennium on the Germany stage (a recreation of Krauser's original stage).

With “Move”, Blanket Music’s biggest surprise is how deep and immense their sound is, without ever raising the volume or overwhelming the listener. Combining elements of lounge, Motown soul, bossa nova, and traces of electronica, and all filtered through a delicate, quiet pop lens, it’s amazing how effortless they make it all sound. These songs simply glide, so confident in themselves that they feel no need to announce themselves or proclaim their beauty.

Our original plan was to shoot the exterior day shots in film using anamorphic lenses – 35mm and 65mm – combined with the Alexa digital camera for the low light work. As we progressed, the Alexa ST, Alexa M and the Alexa 65mm turned out to be the preferred choices along with the Zeiss Master Primes and the 16mm Leica. By December, we had abandoned film completely. The digital cameras provided us with the images we liked and handled the harsh weather conditions as well.

And, assuming the music is genuine, how can one argue with that? Almost every little kid had a blanket growing up, or some soft thing to which he or she became attached. Blanket is mostly the product of Portland, Oregon’s Chad Crouch, who runs Hush Records and is quite the wearer of hats in Northwest indie rock circles.

The 2004 remake features loads of classical music, with several "cover" versions for each tune. Firaxis Games were developing Civilization IV at the same time, and so several tunes ended up in both games.

A great funky set from Willis Jackson – recorded in conjunction with the same sessions that yielded the classic Harlem Underground album! The record features Willis working with Paul Winley – blowing soulful riffs over backing by a group that includes organ, guitar, and added horns, on a set of hip early 70s soul covers and pop tunes. The album includes the same funky version of "Ain't No Sunshine" that appeared on the Harlem Underground album – plus a cover of "Soul Train" that's pretty darn nice, and sweeter versions of tunes like "Love Story", "What's Going On", "It's Too Late", "Don't Knock My Love", and "Heavy Makes You Happy".

The album opens powerfully and dramatically with "Iceberg", an imposing cliff of pristine white ice as tall as a building with the awesome latent power to sink ships. This imposing organ-powered piece of music has similar grandeur and magnificent majesty. The song begins as a delicate and atmospheric slow fugue, sounding like a church organ, before erupting into a wild keyboard jamboree in which the organist goes absolutely berserk in a roaring storm of sound. The golden-voiced singer emerges from the organ storm in full impassioned voice in this dramatic refrain. It's powerful and heavy, but also beautifully melodic at the same time. This is the kind of thunderous and unrestrained organ music they ought to play in a grand cathedral as the bishop glides diagonally down the aisle across the chequered floor. How can Rare Bird possibly follow that storming opening foray onto the music scene. They follow it with "Times", a fast-based barnstorming number with all the unstoppable power of Stormin' Norman Schwarzkopf leading his army into battle.

Blanket, Crouch’s band, also implements elements of Brit-Pop. Nice is best described as a lounge-pop album, one you can sit and relax too, dance along with, or just play for entertainment. Rooted in 50’s, 60’s, and 90’s, this album is a good collection of pop if you like bands that revisit the old and attempt to make it new again.

DIDJAREMEMBER: In our original JIMI HENDRIX Series, we told you that JIMI was, at one time, supposed to play lead guitar on the DONVOAN hit HURDY GURDY MAN. HENDRIX then agreed to play guitar on DONOVAN's version.

Noise For Pretend takes the first half of the release mix a touch of jazz into their sometimes breezy, sometimes sultry pop songs. Lead singer Esperanza Spalding rightly takes front and center on each track (and rightly so), with breathy vocals that sound somewhat like Bebel Gilberto. Whether she’s singing about ladykillers (“Pants With His Halfway Down”) or nothing but be-bops (“Money Penny”), her torch song voice will have you wondering what they’ll do next.

One of the greatest trio albums ever from the Jamaican scene – a classic set that kicked off the sound of reggae for the 70s, while still holding onto the rocksteady sound of the years before! The vocals of the Maytals are tied together tightly, but still have a rough edge that's quite different than American group soul at the time – partly because the energy of Toots Hibbert is hard to contain, as he leaps forward with a great sense of spirit that paves the way for later solo stars to emerge from Jamaican groups. Production is by Leslie Kong – who's got a great ear for the bottom end – and titles include the classics "Monkey Man", "Pressure Drop", and "Peeping Tom" – plus "Revival Reggae", "Give Peace A Chance", "Gold & Silver", "The Preacher", "Bla Bla Bla", "African Doctor", "Sun Moon & Star", "She's My Scorcher", and "I Shall Be Free".

Their follow-up hit, MY MIND'S EYE, went to #4 on the British Chart but their next single, I CAN'T MAKE IT, was banned by the BBC. After a label switch a couple of months later to the newly formed IMMEDIATE RECORDS (founded by ANDREW OLDHAM), THE SMALL FACES put together a string of three straight Top Ten singles: today's psychedelic classic ITCHYCOO PARK (#3, 1967), TIN SOLDIER (#9, 1967) and LAZY SUNDAY (#2, 1968).

RARE BIRD is a quartet that relied heavily on keyboards as both Kafinetti and Field played together, the former on piano and synthesizers and the latter on organ - much like PROCOL HARUM and later on GREENSLADE. They had a hit with "Sympathy" in the UK but were more successful in Continental Europe where they became quite popular, their sound often reminding us of BARCLAY JAMES HARVEST. This double keyboard attack held no place for a guitarist until Field left along with the drummer Ashton and another keyboard player Lamb. This change occurred as they switched to Polydor label and they took on a guitar player, and played a harder rock with some funky lines. Nic Potter of VDGG played on two albums of the second line-up and John Wetton guested on one.

This purely instrumental section of the piece emerges from the previous 'Wishbone Ascension', which closes with an ascending G major chord. The chord gradually transforms into the minor mode, reminiscent of the 'fate' motive in Mahler's Sixth Symphony, and comes to rest on a high G minor second inversion. The gentle cymbal attacks continue to underpin this chord in quavers, which help to mark the speed: crotchet = 60-63.

The Blanket is the band of Chad Crouch, the boy most likeable, let alone titular of the huge Hush, label as well as disowned how much immense one as far as the quality of the productions. Gotten passionate of diagram, Chad put on label nearly for joke the some year makes with the single aid of its Mac and a masterizzatore. After little time eccolo with a containing catalogue some of rarest gems of the entire musical panorama American. This disc is the confirmation: a rock austico of author, strongly influenced from the inglese/scozzese school ( Drake or Belle & Sebastian ), but also from some “post” pointed out to the Joan Of Arc (even if the voice of Chad it is 100,000 times better here and here than that one of the good Kinsella) or Sea And The Cake. The Commodore 64 version employs a sort of mash-up/medley theme that very notably includes Yankee Doodle. Yankee Doodle also appears in the arcade version. That song exists in Japan as a children's song, with totally different lyrics. That's probably why it was included. That said, many of the songs in arcade Frogger avert this, to the point that later releases had to change them.

The movie was shot in story order, and part of Alejandro’s directing style is to maintain a natural story rhythm. This allowed the characters to age and physically change as the story progressed. No detail was overlooked, including the optimal time for natural light to shoot the scene. Our emphasis on shooting at the right time of day meant the window of opportunity was small and you had to execute under pressure. Our ability to do retakes was severely limited and the pressure was on all departments to perform at exact times. It was a scary but exhilarating feeling knowing you have limited time to shoot such an extraordinary scene with so many moving parts.

The soundtrack to It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is primarily public-domain easy listening music. Originally done because the show had a low budget, it's usually in contrast with the show's subject matter.

Dilla drops a beat full of rugged drums and eerie synths and Common recalls the days when he had the Sense attached to the end of his name. I just wish he’d stop name-dropping the Matrix. That movie came out like a decade ago. Who taught him to write lyrics, The Clipse?

I just love albums like this (but they’re also so darned frustrating to write about at times). I get as much enjoyment picking apart the music, with all of its subtleties (hence some of the frustrations), as I do the lyrics.

Think disco sounds only hit the dancefloors in the 70s? Think again – because this killer collection brings back a whole host of club-sounding gospel tunes from the time – proving once again that soul and gospel records have always gone hand in hand over the years! The vibe isn't mainstream disco, the kind you'd hear on the charts – and instead is the hipper side of upbeat styles – the funk and well-crafted rhythms used by some of the better indies during the disco generation, and that great run of underground club styles in the early 80s too!

Crouch says this is party music, and it is, though it’s also good hangover music: soothing and free of shrill noise. The hooks are so subtle and laid-back that it can take a few listens to appreciate Crouch’s catchy songwriting– most notably on “K – A – R – A [breathless] O – K [keep it coming] EEEeeeeeeeee,” where his droopy-dog vocals and clever lyrics dance over a catchy guitar riff. Greg Lind’s drumming is limber but restrained, and even the drum machine that augments the music is nicely integrated– as on the hot jazz-meets-IDM “Itchy Popcorn,” which builds to speaker-shaking bass. Crouch is a low-key frontman with a thin, melodic voice, perfect for the tone of this record, and he and Ross Seligman play killer staccato lines on guitar.

Although they’d released a debut full-length entitled Nice, my introduction to Blanket Music came on their Split EP that came out a couple months ago with Noise For Pretend. On that 8 track release (4 of which were from Blanket Music), I was introduced to their penchant for catchy tracks that mix sincerity with a fair amount of tongue-in-cheek humor. With a mix of bossa nova, light jazz, pop, and a touch of electronics, they carve out a niche of 12 tracks that even the most jaded curmudgeon would have a hard time not tapping their foot and humming to.

During the last two levels of Call of Duty World at War, one can hear a German military march (the Königgrätzer Marsch, to be exact) playing in the background in specific areas. Considering that it's been around since 1866, it's almost certainly in the public domain by now.

The title track gets things, well, moving, with a jazzy rhythm, gurgling electronics, and a guitar and bass progression reminiscent of Tortoise’s “TNT” album. But Blanket Music easily pushes aside any cold, calculating post-rock labels with “Sway”, a gentle, Caribbean-tinged ballad that culminates in a gorgeous chorus beseeching you to just “shut up and sway your hips”. It’s a request easy to accomodate with the track’s undulating percussion and melody, similar in sound to Patrick Phelan’s gorgeous work on “Parlor” (though a bit more upbeat and a good deal less introspective and mopey).

This is reinforced by the electric guitar part which now plays sustained, full chords with the drums playing a softly struck ride-cymbal on beats two and three. The word 'fly' is sung to a long melisma with the vocals sung vertically in thirds ([1st vocal] G-E-F-E-C; [2nd vocal] E-C-D-C-A). There is also added reverb which distances the music. The overall effect is one of 'gliding', taking the listener from earth to sky. It also represents the ever-changing psychological states of a dreamscape or an inscape. The second verse repeats the material of the first with the melisma falling on the word 'light'.

For the majority of my life, I have associated Portland with the larger-than-life figure of Ken Kesey. The city and its state seemed a place for arty, literate lumberjacks with bottomless energy, a love for nature and a willingness to take risks. In Portland roamed the mountain men who wore french-cuffed shirts. They laughed hard, they drank hard, and they made their lives hard. They wore Martin Luther cufflinks in Catholic Church and Casper the Ghost cufflinks in the bad side of town. Portland has always seemed to be a place for orneriness, good humor and big plates of food, and this split release makes the case that Portland still resonates with Kesey’s hearty spirit.

About “Stuntin’ Like My Daddy ”

It is the original melody of 'Cadence and Cascade' (see my analysis of 'In the Wake of Poseidon') and is scored for voices, acoustic guitars, electric piano, zither, bass and drums. The song has three verses with integrated choruses. Verse three is sung unaccompanied except for the drums.

The record showcases the best of Blanket Music’s merging of understated bossa nova and quirky pop, and against a backdrop of squiggly programming, Chad Crouch’s vocals have never sounded better. Of course, he is the only person in town who can pull off singing slightly off-key–instead of grating on your ears, it sounds as if he’s a little too laid-back to drag himself all the way up to the right notes, because it’s so nice down there on the beaches of Rio, and he’s still got a froofy drink to finish. Noise for Pretend is much more traditional with their sultry bossa nova, sprinkling hippy syncopation in the sweet rhythm of upright bass, guitar, and drums. Their tropical flavor is sealed by the gorgeous soprano of bassist Esperanza Spalding, whose talent betrays her youthful age (she was 16 last time we checked). You can also see Ms. Spalding in the amazing jazz-hiphop fusion band, Blak Scienz Tribe.

We began rehearsing and testing early September in Calgary amidst a major snowstorm and at the start of an early winter. The first day rehearsal involved wearing neoprene waders and boots, working in a river current of knee deep icy water with snow falling. This opening scene included Glass, his son Hawk, and Bridger, a trapper, slowly walking through the water as they spot an elk in the distance. With a single shot Glass takes the elk down. Within minutes an Indian party descends on the camp. This scene involved about 200 actors as Indians and fur trappers, dozens of horses, bows and arrows, and musket rifles. All was carefully rehearsed and choreographed so we, the audience, experience the battle in real time.

What better way to introduce a couple of bands to people than through the cheap split CD EP? Sure, the split 7″ or split 10″ is still a good choice, but if you want to offer up more than a mere brief taste, the CD is the obvious choice. Of course, the other side of an introduction split EP is that it’s also best to contain some music that won’t be available on the upcoming full lengths, so that if you like the band in question, you won’t end up with two copies of the same music (which this release also does). Although Blanket Music has already released one album and been featured on several other samplers, this sampler teams them up with one of the newest artists on the label and because of singer crossover, it actually works as more of a cohesive piece than one might expect.
